The Thought We Don’t Talk About (but almost every woman has)

Have you ever caught yourself staring out the car window and thinking, If everything fell apart… I could live under that bridge?

It sounds extreme. Maybe even a little irrational. I was talking with a girlfriend the other day, and when this came up, we both paused—and then laughed—because we’d both had the exact same thought.

So what is this? Why do so many capable, thoughtful women go there?

Part of it is instinct. Women think ahead. We consider different outcomes—especially when we’ve built something worth protecting. That “bridge thought” is the brain asking a quiet question: Would I be okay, no matter what?

And I believe part of that comes from the fact that, not that long ago, women didn’t always have control over their financial lives. Even though that has changed, it’s not surprising that a small part of us still wants to be prepared—no matter how much we’ve built.

That whisper—make sure you’ll be okay—isn’t weakness. It’s awareness.

And it can be a starting point.

Instead of pushing that thought aside, use it as an opportunity to get more intentional about your finances.

Here are a few places to begin:

  • Know your number. What does it actually cost to support your lifestyle each month? Not a perfect budget—just a clear number.

  • Maintain a cash cushion. A few months of expenses in a savings account creates a strong foundation.

  • Understand what you own. Where are your accounts? How are they invested? What is growing for your future?

  • Define the life you want. And align your plan with that vision.

These steps don’t have to be complicated—but they create clarity and put you back in control.

And over time, that “bridge thought” starts to lose its hold and may even become something you can smile at.

Not because life becomes predictable, but because you’ve created a plan that supports you.

If this resonates with you, it may be time to turn that quiet “what if” into something more concrete.

I work with women who have built meaningful lives and want to feel more intentional and confident in how their finances support them. Together, we replace that lingering thought with a clear, thoughtful plan—so you can feel grounded in your decisions and confident in where you’re headed.

If you’re ready to feel more clarity and direction, I’d love to have that conversation with you. Click this link to answer a short questionnaire and book your complimentary 30-minute visit.
